THOUSAND OAKS : Protective Wall for House Is Rejected

Thousand Oaks officials have decided against building a sound wall around a house near the Ventura Freeway that was hit by bullets last month in an apparent drive-by shooting.
Instead, the City Council voted 3 to 1 Tuesday, with Councilwoman Judy Lazar dissenting, to ask city staff members to look into less costly ways of protecting the house, which is near the Hampshire Road on-ramp.
Building a 350-foot-long sound wall would cost $170,000. But city officials said some alternatives, including planting dense shrubs and trees, could cost as little as $4,500.
The council also asked staff members to check other Thousand Oaks residences that have been hit in drive-by shootings to see whether they, too, should be protected.
“Shrubs may be beneficial,” Police Cmdr. Kathy Kemp said. “They aren’t as attractive a target.”
