The City Council has awarded a $2.1-million construction contract for the first phase of a city sports park, complete with ball fields, dugouts and bleachers.
The council voted Tuesday to proceed on the long-awaited project, which is being funded by a local bond measure approved in 1990.
The council has earmarked $3.8 million for the sports park, which will be next to Marco Forster Middle School, near Camino Del Avion and Del Obispo Street.
The project includes fields for baseball, softball and soccer and a community center. Plans also call for a roadway, parking lot and snack bar. The roadway straddles a proposed site for a future elementary school. No groundbreaking date has been set, but the first phase is scheduled to be completed by this fall.
Before the council approved the construction bid for the project’s first phase, Councilwoman Collene Campbell asked city staff to explore drafting plans for roller hockey facilities at the park as well. “I think it would be a huge mistake if we don’t,” Campbell said.
The city has budgeted $1.4 million for the community center, slated for the second phase.
