Ex-Gov. Casey May Seek Democratic Nomination in ’96

WASHINGTON — Former Pennsylvania Gov. Robert P. Casey, a prominent anti-abortion crusader, said Thursday he may challenge President Clinton for the 1996 Democratic presidential nomination.
If he ran, he would have a ready source of funds and campaign help from anti-abortion activists: He is a devout Roman Catholic and was chief architect of a Pennsylvania law limiting abortion that was tested in the Supreme Court two years ago and largely upheld.
The prospect of a primary challenge--even from such a long shot--is a major worry for Clinton. He faces an uphill reelection fight even without such a challenge, after the Democratic debacle in last year’s congressional elections.
“I am looking at it. I just have a general concern that the country is heading in the wrong direction and that my party is heading in the wrong direction,” Casey said in a telephone interview.
