‘ELK’ OMISSIONS

Share

I admire very much Brian Wescott’s article about the legacy of the play “Black Elk Speaks” (“A Double-Edged Drama,” Feb. 5) and also hope for a burgeoning of theater by and about Indian peoples.

I wonder, though, why the editors of Calendar would print this article with no mention of either the author of the original book, John G. Neihardt, or the adapter of the theater piece, Christopher Sergel. The Times, which has often buried nominations for screenwriters deep in news stories on the Oscars, seems to continue marginalizing writers. Which is odd, considering that you’re writers too.
