Specter to Formally Declare Candidacy in Spring

DES MOINES —
Sen. Arlen Specter announced Saturday he will formally declare his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination this spring.
Specter, 65, a moderate from Pennsylvania and the only abortion-rights supporter in the Republican field, made the announcement at a news conference here.
“After 100 days of exploratory travels, I have decided that I will make a formal announcement this spring of my candidacy for the Republican nomination,” he said.
