It wasn’t a difficult decision choosing the most valuable player in the Anaheim Hilton & Towers Classic.

Everyone fell a rung well below Cal State Fullerton first baseman D.C. Olsen. Olsen slammed two home runs, the last igniting a four-run seventh inning that lifted the Titans to a 14-6 victory over Texas Sunday night in front of 2,021. The game matched two of the nation’s highly ranked college baseball teams.

It was Olsen’s fourth home run of the tournament and fifth of the season. He was six for 13 for the tournament. “He was awfully good this week,” Titan Coach Augie Garrido said. “He was very consistent.”

The victory gave Fullerton (14-2) the tournament championship with a 3-0 record. Texas, unbeaten going into the event, fell to 15-2.

The Longhorns, however, won’t have to wait long for a chance at revenge. The teams begin a three-game series Friday in Austin. But if this game was any indication of what’s to come, the pitchers had better be braced.

“I don’t know how it will translate into that series, but I think it will assure some big crowds and some exciting baseball,” Garrido said.

Both starting pitchers started the game with unbeaten records, but both were nailed for 11 hits. Ted Silva (5-0), however, picked up the decision, working 5 2/3 innings. Texas ace J.D. Smart (5-1) took the loss. Mark Kotsay got the save.

“We felt like we got what we needed from Silva,” Garrido said. “He had some bad breaks that got him in trouble in the inning he went out.”

The Titans had 18 hits, Texas 13, and the fireworks began early.

Tony Miranda gave the Titans a 1-0 lead in the first with his second home run of the season, and Olsen delivered the first of his two homers with the bases empty in the second.

Silva gave up two runs on Jason Layne’s wind-blown home run to right in the third, but a double play earlier kept Silva out of more serious trouble.

The Titans picked up one run and loaded the bases with none out in the third. C.J. Ankrum led off the inning with a triple and scored on Miranda’s double. Kotsay walked and Brian Loyd’s bunt turned into a hit. But Smart buckled down, striking out the next two batters and getting the third to fly out.

Smart gave up two consecutive walks after Kotsay’s one-out single. The Longhorn pitcher forced Olsen to pop out, but Joe Fraser delivered a grand slam with two outs.

Just when it looked as if Silva was rolling again, the Longhorns scored four runs in the sixth with J.P. Webb and Harkrider each getting doubles. That sent Silva to the sidelines.

But the Titans came back with the big seventh inning, with all the runs scoring after two outs. Fullerton added three runs in the eighth.

In the earlier game, Notre Dame (1-2) posted a 14-5 victory over Pepperdine (7-7).
