2 High Schools Get Books in Spanish

Students at Fullerton and Santa Ana high schools have received Spanish-language literature collections from the Mexican government.

The collections are valued at more than $10,000 each and are being kept for student use at the high schools’ libraries, officials said.

Fullerton High School Principal Mikki Gil publicly thanked the Mexican Consulate of Santa Ana during a recent school board meeting, saying she was thrilled to receive the literary collection, which includes novels, autobiographies and books on anthropology and agriculture.

“Mexico wants very much to maintain that heritage connection” between that country and students in the United States, she said.

LOS ALAMITOS

Chamber Sponsors Youth Competition

The Los Alamitos Area Chamber of Commerce is looking for teen-agers to join in a unique competition for a chance to win a scholarship and represent the city in various community events.

The competition coincides with the first Los Alamitos Summerfest, scheduled in June at Laurel Park.

Applications are now available at Los Alamitos High School, Laurel High School and at the chamber office. Deadline for submission is March 31.

Organizers said the competition is no beauty contest and contestants will be judged based on a variety of criteria, including volunteer work.

To qualify, a contestant must be 17, 18 or 19 and live in Los Alamitos, Seal Beach or Rossmoor.

Sixteen finalists will be selected, and one male and one female winner will be chosen. The winners each will receive a $1,000 scholarship.

Nature for Kids at Turtle Rock Center

Children 3 through 5 years can take a close-up look at plants and animals at the Turtle Rock Nature Center on Fridays from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., until March 10.

The ABCs of Nature will offer activities including animal visits, trail walks, nature games and crafts. The Nature Center and Children’s Museum at Turtle Rock Community Park also offers arts and crafts programs from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturdays for children age 2 through 6.

LA HABRA

Girl Scouts Donate Play Items to Museum

Daisy Scout Troop 474 of Whittier has donated puppets, puzzles, children’s books and dolls for use in the Children’s Museum at La Habra.

Museum officials said they will use the donated items in an exhibit featuring a preschool environment.
