Notes on a Scorecard - March 2, 1995

I give the King alumni a 1 1/2-puck advantage over the King varsity. . . .

The alums would feature Bernie Nicholls, Luc Robitaille, Tomas Sandstrom, Alexei Zhitnik, Paul Coffey, Garry Galley, Corey Millen, Shawn McEachern, Bob Kudelski, Todd Elik, Larry Murphy, Jay Wells, Steve Duchesne and Glenn Healy on the ice, Pat Quinn returning to coaching and Bob Pulford as general manager. . . .

The worst thing about the Kings’ 8-4 loss to Chicago on Tuesday at the Forum was that they reverted to last season’s form--taking too many chances, being caught out of position and facing outnumbered breaks all night. . . .

That was quite a commitment Long Beach State made to its basketball program when it gave Seth Greenberg an upgraded contract offer attractive enough to remove him as a candidate for the USC job. . . .

The first UCLA adult fantasy basketball camp will be Aug. 17-20 at Pauley Pavilion. Instructors will include Bill Walton, Jamaal Wilkes, Sidney Wicks, Walt Hazzard, Don MacLean and Pooh Richardson. Lucious Allen will serve as commissioner. . . .

Bruin Coach Jim Harrick believes his 5-foot-10 point guard, Tyus Edney, will have a productive professional career and compares him to Rickey Green, who was once the NBA’s fastest player. . . .

Shaquille O’Neal, 41 points and 10 rebounds, vs. Patrick Ewing, 32 points and 15 rebounds, made for terrific TV on Tuesday. . . .

Magic players might not be great free-throw shooters, but if they keep getting to the line 45 times a game, as they did against the Knicks, they will be tough to beat in the playoffs. . . .

The drums are beating already for the May 6 Oscar De La Hoya-Rafael Ruelas fight at Caesars Palace, the most anticipated bout between two Southland stars since Bobby Chacon defeated Danny (Little Red) Lopez in the ninth round in 1974 at the Sports Arena. . . .

A news conference was held Tuesday in Hollywood, another in Las Vegas on Wednesday, and there will be others in New York, Miami, San Antonio, Houston, San Diego and Phoenix. . . .

De La Hoya is being guaranteed $1.75 million and Ruelas $1 million, but promoter Bob Arum believes their take from the pay-per-view receipts will far exceed that. . . .

De La Hoya, who has been established as a 9-5 favorite at Caesars Palace, says, “The key to the fight will be my jab. Ruelas can’t block a jab and I’ve got a very good jab.” . . .

“This will be one of Oscar’s easiest fights because there is no comparison between the two in boxing ability,” De La Hoya trainer Robert Alcazar said. . . .

Alcazar, who had been criticized for not giving De La Hoya enough advice between rounds against John John Molina, said, “We make our game plans before the fights, not during them. Oscar knew what kind of a fight it was going to be.” . . .

Chris Dundee, Angelo’s older brother who promoted the first Muhammad Ali-Sonny Liston fight 31 years ago at Miami Beach, celebrated his 88th birthday last week. . . .

Reports on the purse Lawrence Taylor will receive from wrestling Bam Bam Bigelow in WrestleMania range from $100,000 to $500,000. . . .

How coveted are playing spots on the senior tour? There were 136 golfers who tried to qualify Monday for the four remaining places in this weekend’s $750,000 HP Health Care Classic at Ojai. . . .

Jet-setters: Seniors Arnold Palmer, Chi Chi Rodriguez, Tom Weiskopf and Jim Colbert fly to tournaments in their private jets. . . .

Antonio Harvey, the 6-11 Laker, lists golf as a hobby--miniature golf. . . .

Santa Anita officials have received 18 media credential requests from Japan for March 18, when Hishi Amazon, the world’s richest mare, makes her U.S. debut in the $150,000 Santa Ana Handicap. . . .

Trainer Richard Mandella could threaten Charlie Whittingham’s Santa Anita record 14 stakes victories in the 1970-71 meeting. . . .

At the halfway mark, Mandella’s horses have won six stakes, and he’s just gearing up. . . . The 44-year-old conditioner will have American Day in the San Rafael Stakes and Romarin in the Arcadia this weekend, double-team the March 11 Big Cap with Best Pal and Dare and Go, and send unbeaten 3-year-old Afternoon Deelites in the March 19 San Felipe. . . .

Dexter Carter, the kick returner and running back from the San Francisco 49ers, was an excellent free-agent signing for the New York Jets. . . .
