Good Grades Earn Meals, T-Shirts

About half of A.G. Currie Middle School’s 800 students have qualified for its Renaissance program, which rewards academic excellence with restaurant discount coupons and T-shirts.

Assistant Principal Allan Waterman said that during the first quarter of the 1994-95 school year, 49% of the students earned a 3.0 grade-point average or better. Eighty-nine students improved their GPA at least half a grade-point, and 99 improved between .25 and .49 a grade-point.

Certificates and coupons to Burger King, El Pollo Loco, Jack in the Box and other restaurants are given to some students.

CSUF Student Wins REFORMA Award

Anthony S. Garcia, a student at Cal State Fullerton, has been selected to receive the 1995 scholarship award from REFORMA’s Orange County chapter.

REFORMA is a national association that promotes library services for the Spanish-speaking population.

In 1993, Garcia won the John Cotton Dana Library Public Relations Award for the programs he developed while working for the Orange Public Library.

School Trustees Win Recognition

The California School Boards Assn. has given its Board Achievement Award to Huntington Beach City School District trustees for graduation of three of its members from the association’s Master of Boardmanship program.

The award is designed to increase board members’ knowledge of educational issues and help them perform their duties more effectively. It also recognizes their “demonstrated commitment to California public education.”

About 600 school board members statewide are enrolled in the Master of Boardmanship program.

Board members Shirley Carey, Robert Mann and Catherine McGough have completed the 60-hour training program that offers weekend courses in such topics as curriculum, district budget and finance, legal responsibilities of school boards, and leadership techniques.

Allergan Gives $30,000 to Schools

Allergan Inc. recently contributed $30,000 to three Orange County school districts for math and science education.

The Irvine, Newport-Mesa and Santa Ana unified school districts will each receive $10,000 to help purchase specialized calculators and other equipment for math and science curriculum.
