24TH SURVEY : K&B; Still No. 1 Among Area Home Builders
For the second year in a row, Los Angeles-based Kaufman & Broad Home Corp. easily captured the top spot in The Times annual survey of residential building in Southern California, building almost 3,000 houses and generating revenue of more than a half-billion dollars in 1994.
K&B; built 2,946 single-family houses last year and sold all but 393 of them for a sales volume of $513 million, an increase of 18.2% over its 1993 revenues of $434 million.
The developer, which builds mainly entry-level homes in the $100,000-to-$200,000 price range, did not make a forecast for its 1995 business.
The Times has conducted its voluntary survey of Southland home building since the early 1970s. This year, some 200 surveys were mailed to home builders in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Ventura and Kern counties. Seventy-six builders participated in the 24th annual survey, down from 89 respondents in 1993.
The No. 2 builder on the survey was Pardee Construction Co., which built 1,740 houses, condos and apartments and sold all but 125, for a sales volume of $273.4 million, up 20.7% from its 1993 volume of $226.5 million.
The Los Angeles-based builder, which was ranked No. 3 on last year’s survey, estimated that it would build 1,331 units in 1995 for a sales revenue of $267.5 million.
Costa Mesa-based Standard Pacific Corp. was ranked No. 3 in the survey, building 882 homes and condos and generating 1994 sales volume of $267 million. Standard Pacific, which has not participated in the annual survey in recent years, did not make an estimate of its 1995 business.
The No. 4-ranked builder is Brock Homes of Woodland Hills, a subsidiary of Ryland Homes, which moved up from No. 16 in the 1993 survey. Brock built 1,312 houses in 1994, selling all but 62, for a sales volume of $238 million, more than 2 1/2 times its 1993 volume of $89 million.
Brock estimates that it will build 1,500 homes this year, for revenues of $270 million.
The Lewis Homes Group of Companies took the No. 5 spot on this year’s survey, down from No. 4 last year. Lewis built 1,009 homes and condos for a volume of $232 million, up slightly from 1993 sales of $222 million. In 1995, Lewis expects to build 1,000 units, for a volume of $230 million.
