Arthur C. Korn and Michael J. Beverage

Water district directors, Yorba Linda

Korn was elected president and Beverage vice president of the Yorba Linda Water District Board of Directors.

The district provides water and sewer service to Yorba Linda and portions of Anaheim, Brea, Placentia and unincorporated Orange County.

Korn served on the board from 1975 through 1982 and again starting in 1987. Beverage, who was elected to the water district board in 1992, is a former Yorba Linda mayor and City Council member.

Donald Havens

UPS driver, Dana Point

The United Parcel Service congratulated Havens for finishing his 30th year with the company.

Havens, a Dana Point resident, began his UPS career in Covina as a package car driver and then moved to driving tractor-trailers in 1989 for “a change of pace,” he said.

Havens plans to retire in two years and open his own antique store.

Kellie Grillo

Eighth-grade student at Columbus Middle School, Tustin

Nike named Grillo as the national champion in the Michael Jordan Essay Challenge for 10- to 12-year-olds.

Her winning entry was based on the question, “What would you do that is new, if you could do what you wanted to do?”

She received a Nike sports jacket, and a copy of her essay was sent to Michael Jordan.

Mike Welch

Police officer, Irvine

Welch won the Irvine Police Officer of the Year title during the 24th annual police awards banquet in Irvine.

He joined the Irvine Police Department in 1985 after working for the Monterey Park and Newport Beach police departments.

Welch is also a six-year member of the Irvine Police Assn. board of directors, where he currently serves as vice president.

Carol Anne Williams

Executive director, Interval House Crisis Shelters, Seal Beach

Gov. Pete Wilson appointed Williams to the state Domestic Violence Advisory Council.

Williams was a founding member of Seal Beach’s Interval House Crisis Shelters and she has been its executive director since 1989.

The organization received a presidential “Point of Light” award from former President George Bush and has also received a presidential citation from President Bill Clinton.

Previously, Williams received the California Governor’s Award for outstanding service to victims of abuse.
