Officials Ready to Sell College Campus

After seven years of delay, Glendale Community College officials are prepared to sell the school’s satellite campus in Montrose to an Armenian group that wants to open a parochial elementary school there.

The Congregation of Armenian Catholic Sisters of the Immaculate Conception have offered to pay $2.15 million for the 3.1-acre property. The order’s offer is the highest of three bids being considered by college officials.

Also bidding are Honolulu-based developer Ken Woods and the Homenetmen Armenian General Athletic Union, a youth group hoping to build a new sports center at the site situated at 2361 Florencita Ave.

The Montrose campus opened in 1982 and is presently used by about 900 students taking retirement seminars and classes in nursing, parenting education and English, said William Taylor, the college’s director of business services.

In 1988, he said, the campus was declared surplus property. “The cost of upkeep of the Montrose site increased over the years and became more of a drain on college resources.”

Students attending classes at the campus will be transferred to other sites on or near the main Glendale Community College campus some time before the start of the fall semester, he said.

College trustees will consider the bids and select a buyer during a 5 p.m. board meeting today.
