CAMARILLO : Council Distributes Funds to 15 Agencies

Fifteen agencies that provide housing and social services have been slated to receive portions of about $380,000 in federal funding allocated by the Camarillo City Council.

The council selected the organizations to receive the federal Community Development Block Grants on the basis of the services they offer to Camarillo and Ventura County residents.

During their Wednesday meeting, the council selected such nonprofit programs as the Ventura Fair Housing Council, the county’s Senior Nutrition Program, the Palmer Drug Abuse Program, Food Share and the Assn. for Retarded Children to receive funds.

But because the requests far exceeded the available funds, the City Council turned down requests from six agencies.

“It just comes down to having more requests than money to allocate,” said Councilwoman Charlotte Craven. “These are all good programs. We just can’t fund them all.”

The grants were typically $5,000 to $10,000 each, but some programs received significantly larger amounts. The city’s Housing Cost Reduction program, for example, which helps defray the costs of land used for low- to moderate-income housing, received $168,850.
