COLLEGE ROUNDUP : UC Santa Barbara Outlasts Long Beach

Donny Harris had 45 kills and Todd Rogers had 100 assists to lead visiting UC Santa Barbara over Long Beach State in five long games, 14-16, 15-10, 15-6, 8-15, 15-12 in a Big West Conference men’s volleyball match Thursday night.

The Gauchos (10-6, 9-4) were not the only team with high offensive numbers. For the 49ers (8-5, 7-5), Tom Hoff had 44 kills and Steve Walker had 79 assists.

On the defensive side, Anthony Velasco led the Gauchos with 17 digs, while Long Beach’s Walker had 13.

Ryan Moriano, formerly of El Toro High, had 13 kills for Long Beach State.

In nonleague baseball:

Long Beach State 9, Brigham Young 0--Chad Liefer and Kirk Pierce each hit two-run home runs to lead Long Beach State (10-8) in the series opener. Scott Rivette (2-1) struck out 10 and allowed only five hits through seven innings. The series with BYU (12-13) will continue tonight at Blair Field at 7:05.
