O.C. Treasurer Short List Raises Doubts

Share

* Flash! Members of the Board of Supervisors are about to make a big mistake in appointing John M.W. Moorlach as Orange County treasurer-tax collector.

Moorlach admitted that somebody, whose name he won’t divulge, actually did the analysis about the risky derivatives that Moorlach used as political sound bites against Mr. Citron. Moorlach did not inform the supervisors personally in political comments during their regular meetings because Mr. Moorlach didn’t understand it either.

The board has an obligation to us taxpayers. They should look for that “mystery financial genius” and give him the job.

* It is apparent that our Orange County Board of Supervisors, in its infinite wisdom, is determined to install John M.W. Moorlach as treasurer-tax collector, overriding the good sense recommendation of (CEO William J.) Popejoy for a search of the best qualified person.

Although Mr. Moorlach may just possibly be the most qualified person for the job, in the absence of a proper evaluation against other candidates, certainly we taxpayers are left with yet another large question mark as to the board’s judgment. This is particularly troubling in view of all the recent events. Failing to take the advice of their newly appointed CEO, the board is apparently moving headlong into an appointment without the benefit of a comprehensive search. This has all the appearances of dire things to come.
