Cuba’s President Fidel Castro, not famed for the brevity of his own oratory, appealed Sunday to fellow leaders at the U.N. World Summit for Social Development to keep their speeches short.

Castro’s request, issued from the chair of the summit where he was presiding over the afternoon session, followed an address by Morocco’s Prime Minister Abdellatif Filali that ran well over twice the allotted time.

“I don’t know whether this will have any effect, but I feel I must appeal for speakers to keep to the agreed limit,” the Cuban leader, who had cast aside his usual olive-green fatigues for a business suit and tie, said as he looked around the hall with an impish grin.
