LAGUNA HILLS : Victim’s Friend Wants Park Renamed

Share

In memory of three Laguna Hills High School students who died in a car crash last year, a friend will ask the Laguna Hills City Council to dedicate a park in the name of Brian Voight, the driver.

Voight and his friends were regulars at Clarington Park, a small neighborhood park where kids would gather for soccer and baseball practice.

Laguna Hills High senior Steve Pornbida said that the park was one of Voight’s favorite places--and that he and other friends helped make it an alcohol-free, drug-free place for students to congregate.

“It would be great to name the park after him,” said Pornbida, 16. “It would be a place we could go to remember Brian.”

Many at the high school were grief-stricken by the tragic deaths, which happened April 5, 1994, when a car driven by Voight spun out of control and into oncoming traffic in Aliso Viejo.

Paramedics said the three students died upon impact. Sheriff’s investigators indicated that no alcohol or drugs were involved and added that all three were wearing their seat belts.

City Clerk Mary Carlson said that Laguna Hills does not have a policy or ordinance that would prohibit renaming a park after an individual.

Pornbida is asking the council to name the park after Voight tonight so that the park could be dedicated on the anniversary of the accident.
