ARCADIA: A year after a fatal hit-and-run, the Police Department is asking for the public’s help in solving the death of Shao-Wu Yen, 79, who was killed on March 6, 1994, when he was hit by a small pickup truck that jumped a curb at Holly and Fairview avenues. After hitting Yen, the driver at first slowed down but then sped away, police said. Yen’s family and the Arcadia Chinese Assn. have maintained a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the driver. The truck, possibly a Toyota or Nissan, had a camper shell that appeared to be slightly wider than the truck bed. The truck was faded red. The camper was white with faded red on the sides. AZUSA: An unidentified man jumped to his death Monday from a pedestrian overpass onto the Foothill (210) Freeway. The man, believed to be age 20 to 25, jumped into eastbound traffic at about 1:20 p.m., police said.

DIAMOND BAR: A 49-year-old karate instructor was arrested at his home Thursday on suspicion of sexually abusing a 4-year-old student. Robert Charles Mason was arrested just after 10 a.m. at his home in the 400 block of Platina Drive after sheriff’s detectives conducted a weeklong investigation into reports of child abuse. Detectives said the alleged sexual molestation occurred at Mason’s home--where he teaches karate classes--over the past several months. Mason was being held in lieu of $100,000 bail at the Jail Ward of County-USC Medical Center because of an existing medical condition.

EL MONTE: A 42-year-old El Monte man died in a fire early Monday morning in his trailer home. Norman E. Melvin was found dead in the bedroom of his trailer in the 12000 block of Elliot Avenue just before 3 a.m., authorities said. Fire officials believe the fire was accidental and may have been caused by cigarettes.

MONTEREY PARK: The Police Department will conduct a drunk driving checkpoint at an undisclosed location in the city on Friday, St. Patrick’s Day, from 8 p.m. to midnight.

MONTEREY PARK: The City Council has given final approval to an ordinance imposing the cost of removing the graffiti committed by minors on the vandals’ parents or guardians.

POMONA: A 42-year-old man was found dead in an alley Friday morning. The man, whose name was not released because relatives had not yet been notified, was found lying in an alley in the 700 block of West Monterey Avenue about 7:30 a.m. Police said there was no obvious cause of death and no signs of foul play.

POMONA: Two Pomona men were arrested Thursday on suspicion of marijuana and methamphetamine possession. Carlos Carillo, 27, and Efren Barba Martinez, 20, were arrested at their home in the 1100 block of West Fernleaf Avenue about 5:30 p.m. Police found a pound of marijuana, less than a gram of methamphetamine and a handgun. Both men were being held at Pomona City Jail in lieu of $15,000 each.

SAN GABRIEL: The Police Department has appointed Alex Acosta to the position of full-time crime prevention officer. Acosta, 48, is the department’s first full-time crime prevention officer. He came to San Gabriel from the Montebello Police Department. Residents interested in starting a Neighborhood Watch group or who would like information on other crime prevention programs are advised to call the crime prevention office at (818) 308-2846.
