At the turn of the century, Tustin was home to a Chinese community that numbered 200 people.
The Chinese immigrants were attracted to Tustin because it was by the railroads, which offered steady work. They also got jobs on the various farms around the community.
As Tustin grew, its Chinese population branched out into other lines of work. By the 1890s, Tustin had two Chinese laundries that attracted customers from around the county.
The Chinese residents did face some bias. A group of vandals once damaged one of the laundries by lifting the building off its foundation and dropping it.
Today
Artists who go beyond the confines of canvas and brush will open an exhibit called “Fabrication: formal, found and funky” at the Guggenheim Gallery.
The works of both established and emerging artists will be shown. The artwork includes collages and sculptures.
Admission to the show is free. It continues through April 20. The gallery is at Chapman University, 333 N. Glassell St., Orange.
