COLLEGE BASKETBALL / DAILY REPORT : COACHING RANKS : Assistant Romar to Stay With Bruins

UCLA assistant coach Lorenzo Romar, wooed by Oregon State and Nevada Las Vegas to fill their head coaching vacancies, said Thursday that he has decided to stay with the Bruins.

Romar confirmed that, as inducement to remain in Westwood, he has received a commitment from the UCLA administration that is believed to be a raise in his salary substantially above the $100,000 level--well above the average assistant’s pay.

Last week, Romar removed himself from the UNLV search, although he was the school’s No. 1 candidate.

“It would have been much harder to stay without a commitment,” Romar said of the Oregon State job. “I didn’t go to what I considered an awesome situation. For me and what I want, I don’t know how much better it would get than that situation.”
