OXNARD : 2 Injured as Vehicle Hits Produce Truck

Share

Two people were seriously injured Saturday when their vehicle slammed into the back of a produce truck stopped at a traffic light in Oxnard, police said.

John Sorensen was driving west on Wooley Road about 3 p.m. when he failed to slow down for a red light at Ventura Road and hit the back of a Boskovich Farms truck waiting at the intersection, Oxnard police said. The impact crushed Sorensen’s pickup truck, forcing firefighters to use heavy rescue equipment to free Sorensen and his wife, Leann.

The couple suffered major injuries and were taken to St. John’s Regional Medical Center. Leann Sorensen was listed in critical condition late Saturday, her husband in serious condition, a nursing supervisor said.

Both had been wearing shoulder restraints but not lap seat belts, police said.

Oxnard Police Sgt. Don Mulville said traffic investigators found no skids or brake marks that would have indicated Sorensen tried to slow down before the impact. They do not know how fast the couple’s pickup truck had been going, he said.

The driver of the produce truck, Hector Alvarado, 30, of Oxnard, was not injured. The truck was empty at the time.

Police shut down the westbound lanes of Wooley Road for 90 minutes as they conducted their investigation.
