SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO : Council to Hear Idea for Open-Air Market

The City Council will consider a proposal Tuesday for an open-air market to be operated once a month to draw shoppers to the downtown business area.

A similar approach was used in 1992, but the marketplace closed after its work demands became too great for the operators, said Douglas Dumhart, a city management analyst.

The old marketplace featured vendors, craftsmen, offerings from local businesses and entertainment, and was held on parts of Ortega Highway and Camino Capistrano downtown.

Under the new plan, the council will be asked to sign an agreement with a Redondo Beach firm that puts on similar outdoor events.

The agreement would allow Conte Productions to promote and operate the San Juan Capistrano Marketplace. The event would be held once a month from April through October.

Dumhart said that Conte Productions would coordinate the marketplace, hire and manage all vendors and services, and oversee crowd control and security.

“We’re hoping that a professional promoter will have a strengthened event,” Dumhart said.
