At the turn of the century, Judge Richard Egan was one of Orange County’s most popular figures.

Egan was San Juan Capistrano’s longtime justice of the peace and was a leader in the formation of Orange County.

He gained fame for thwarting a robbery on an Anaheim-San Diego stagecoach. He was shot during the incident but was still able to ward off the robbers and take over the reins of the coach from the injured driver.

In the 1890s, Egan launched the first renovation of Mission San Juan Capistrano, which had been neglected by residents and damaged by vandals. Thanks to his efforts, the mission began to attract tourists.
