James Free and Hernando Williams, who both committed murders nearly 17 years ago, were executed by lethal injection an hour apart at Stateville Correctional Center in Joliet, Ill. It marked the first time since 1952 that Illinois has put two convicts to death on the same day. Free, 41, was convicted of murdering an office worker in April, 1978. Williams, 40, had pleaded guilty to abducting, raping and fatally shooting a childbirth instructor he had held prisoner in the trunk of his car for 36 hours in March, 1978.
