Simi Valley Police Officer Herman (Butch) Hale has been named 1995’s Police Officer of the Year by his colleagues.

The award, given annually by the Simi Valley Police Officers’ Assn., carries with it a Beretta pistol in a monogrammed cherrywood case and the privilege of representing the department at public service functions throughout the county, said Acting Capt. Mark Layhew.

“He’s certainly deserving of the award,” Layhew said of Hale, an 18-year veteran of the department. “He’s one of the nicest, most compassionate people you’d ever want to meet.”

Hale, 40, joined the force in 1977 after serving two years with the Anaheim Police Department.

He has been a senior officer since 1990, working as a traffic accident investigator and firearms instructor.
