NEWPORT BEACH : $192,000 Sought for Reservoir Cover Design

Share

Utilities officials will ask the City Council on Monday to approve a plan to spend $192,000 on a design for a floating cover over Big Canyon Reservoir.

The cover for the 200-million-gallon reservoir, north of Pacific View Drive and east of San Miguel Drive, will eventually help reduce unpleasant tastes and odors in tap water by allowing use of a better disinfection process, officials said.

Installing the cover is the only way the city will be able to meet increasingly more stringent state water quality requirements, Deputy Utilities Director Mike Sinacori said.

“It’s an open-air reservoir that is open to rain, birds, animals. The cover will eliminate any possibility of anything getting into it,” Sinacori said.

Design work for the cover would be completed by March 1, 1996. Construction scheduling will depend on available funding and the status of a similar cover project underway at the San Joaquin Reservoir, where most of the community’s water is stored.
