Matthew Guinan; President Emeritus of Transit Union

Matthew Guinan, 84, president emeritus of the Transport Workers Union of America. Guinan was executive vice president and secretary-treasurer of the TWU during the 1966 New York City transit strike. He and six other union officers spent nine days in jail for refusing to call off the walkout. Joining the union as a trolley operator in 1933, Guinan became TWU International president in 1966. He was returned to office in 1969, 1973 and 1977, then retired in 1979. He had also served as vice president of the national AFL-CIO Executive Council. In New York City on Wednesday.
