Earth Day: Groups Seek to Exclude ‘Polluters’
Activists in Santa Monica have launched a monthlong drive to gather signatures on an environmental petition addressed to Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich.
Anticipating the 25th anniversary of Earth Day on April 22, the “Free The Planet” petition proposes taking back Earth Day from “major polluters such as Texaco and Monsanto,” companies that have attempted to sponsor the environmental day, organizers said.
The petition is being circulated by members of Green Corps, the Sierra Club, California Public Interest Research Group and the Survival Alliance.
The document lists a bill of rights that will uphold and strengthen the “environmental progress of the last 25 years,” including the Safe Drinking Water Act, the Clean Water Act, the Clean Air Act, the Endangered Species Act and other measures.
