Garden Grove was beset by several natural disasters during the first half of the century.

The city’s location in the flatlands of central Orange County made it susceptible to periodic flooding. In 1916, downtown Garden Grove was submerged under three feet of muddy water after days of heavy rainfall. It wasn’t until 1950 that the county finally completed a flood-control project that put an end to the problem.

The 1933 Long Beach earthquake caused significant damage in Garden Grove. Many downtown buildings crumbled, and one resident died. The city immediately embarked on a rebuilding project, constructing several downtown buildings in a distinctive Spanish Colonial style.
