DANA POINT : Council Wants More Site Ideas for Building

Share

A critical City Council told the Community Services Commission to provide several alternative sites for a building that has been donated to the city.

Council member Toni Gallagher said Tuesday that the commission was asked last year to come up with various potential locations for a building donated by developer Barry Brief.

However, the commission instead focused solely on Alipaz Park as the future home of the modest, one-story structure. Deciding where the building should go is the council’s job, not the commission’s, Gallagher said.

“My concern is that the Community Services Commission is overstepping its bounds,” she said.

Gallagher added that concentrating on Alipaz Park is unfair to nearby residents.

Commission member Robert Wilberg said Wednesday that the group didn’t know what the building would be used for, which cut down the list of potential locations.

“We didn’t know the use or intent of this dead building,” Wilberg said. “Was it going to be used as a meeting place or a welding shop? We didn’t know.”

The council directed city staff to clarify that several alternative locations are needed.
