North Hollywood : City OKs Closure of Walk Between Schools
Moving to protect schoolchildren from thieves, drug dealers and gangs that have been congregating on a walkway between two schools, the Los Angeles City Council on Wednesday ordered that the path be closed for 18 months.
The council asked the city Bureau of Engineering to fence off the two entrances to the path used by students at Madison Junior High School and Coldwater Canyon Avenue School.
According to Lisa Zeni, an aide to City Councilman Joel Wachs, parents have complained about criminal activity along the walkway--including robberies, graffiti and drug-peddling--for nearly a year. In May, parents, police and a Wachs aide met to discuss the problem and possible solutions.
For the past 10 months, Zeni said, Wachs’ office worked with the city’s engineering bureau to try to expedite the path closure.
