OCC Student Film Earns College Emmy : A documentary by three Orange Coast College film students has been selected for a College Emmy Award.

The 15-minute video, which chronicles the step-by-step procedure of a bone-marrow transplant, was produced by Jody Chow of Costa Mesa and Jim Kwasniewski and Brad Long of Huntington Beach. The three were honored at the 16th annual College Television Awards, sponsored by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

The trio took second place in the national awards division and first place in the regional division for the educational documentary, titled “Second Chances: The Bone Marrow Transplant.”

Jim Carnett, director of community relations for the college, said the three students received $500 in prize money, a $1,000 grant from Kodak and a plaque with the image of the Emmy statuette.

A total of 365 projects were submitted in the 1995 national competition, with entries coming from 133 colleges and universities.

“Orange Coast College was the only community college to win a top prize,” said William Hall, an OCC film and video instructor.

The students said they put together their documentary last fall in five weeks to meet a requirement for OCC’s “Electronic Field Production” class, which Hall teaches.

“We were stunned when we discovered we’d won the college Emmy,” Long said. “We were up against the best film students in the country, and we entered the video at the last minute, almost on a lark, and really didn’t think we stood much of a chance of winning.”

Other schools that participated included the American Film Institute, USC, New York University, Brown University and the University of North Carolina.
