A Magical ‘Cupcake’

The Little Theatre Rascals are a rarity in Los Angeles children’s theater: a performance troupe actually comprised of children, ranging in age from 7 to 11.

While adults wrote, directed and choreographed “Cupcake and the Seven Hoods,” the Rascals’ second full-fledged production, co-founder Felecia Scott credits the 20-member cast with creating the real magic.

The year-old Little Rascals are a younger version of the Theatre Rascals, a youth acting troupe for 12- to 22-year-olds. Both groups are based at Scott and partner Deirdre Weston’s Faith Acting Studio in Baldwin Hills.

“Cupcake and the Seven Hoods” is a modern take on the Snow White fairy tale that features original music, dancing and a “forest” populated by such whimsical creatures as Funky Skunky, Lovey Dovey, Foxy Mama and Honey Bunny.

While these particular dwarves indeed sing “Heigh Ho” as they trudge off to work, their destination is a carwash. Scott says it all adds up to a good time.

“We even have a rapper who does a James Brown impression,” she said. “It’s really a lot of fun.”
