Moscow V-E Day

The writers of the two letters regarding President Clinton’s planned trip to Moscow have it wrong (March 27).
It is only fair to say that the war against Nazi Germany ended when Russian troops were about one block from the Chancellery, whereupon Adolf Hitler shot himself. It was then that all resistance collapsed, but not until Russia had lost over 20 million souls.
It was President Kennedy who paid tribute, saying that it was the Russians who tore the guts out of the German army. Winston Churchill also paid tribute to Russia as the real force that brought Nazism down. What the Russia of Yeltsin is today is not the point. This is the solemn anniversary of the end of a terrible war.
