If some officials had their way, Fountain Valley might have become Fountain Beach.

In the 1950s, county officials urged the farmers of Fountain Valley to incorporate into a city. The area was largely agricultural at the time, yet development was rapidly encroaching.

Garden Grove and Santa Ana both tried to annex the area, and Huntington Beach expressed interest as well. At one point, some Fountain Valley leaders considered annexing 10,000 acres, including a substantial beach area near the Santa Ana River.

Leaders eventually agreed to a more modest cityhood plan, with Huntington Beach eventually annexing the oceanfront area.
