From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Armenia’s largest Christian denomination, the Apostolic Church, elected 63-year-old Gagerin II as its new Patriarch. Ethnic Armenian delegates from around the globe chose Gagerin II to fill the post of Catholicos of all Armenians, which was filled by an interim head in August after the death of Patriarch Vazgen I, who had led the church since 1955. Syrian-born Gagerin II became an archbishop of the church in 1973 in Lebanon after rising through the ranks.
