World IN BRIEF : KENYA : 2 Opposition Leaders Held; Clergy Assailed
Kenyan police arrested two leading opposition members of Parliament after the government launched a fierce counteroffensive against Roman Catholic bishops who denounced corruption and injustice. Paul Muite and Kiraitu Murungi were picked up with four others at the Nairobi offices of the Mwangaza Trust, an anti-poverty group banned by the government in February as partisan. The arrests came after the government accused Kenya’s Catholic hierarchy of being in league with guerrillas and the opposition in a plot to overthrow President Daniel Arap Moi. The blistering government rejoinder followed a pastoral letter by the bishops in which they attacked corruption and lawlessness, saying Kenya’s leaders faced a crisis of credibility.
