CHP Car on Freeway Shoulder Hit
An unoccupied California Highway Patrol car parked on the shoulder of the San Diego Freeway was totaled early Thursday morning when a driver, who had fallen asleep, slammed into it, CHP officials said.
No one was injured in the accident, CHP spokeswoman Angel Johnson said.
Albert Truong, 33, of Garden Grove was cited for “unsafe turning on a freeway” after his 1987 Mazda pickup crashed into a CHP patrol car on the northbound San Diego Freeway near Sand Canyon Avenue, Johnson said. Witnesses told officers they estimated the car was traveling 70 m.p.h., she said.
At the time of the collision, the two CHP officers were on the roadway’s right shoulder evaluating a motorist whom they had pulled over on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, Johnson said.
The force of the collision propelled the CHP car into the motorist’s car, damaging it as well, Johnson said.
There were no damage figures on the three vehicles available.
