In an effort to increase the number of applicants for the 1995-96 Ventura County grand jury and achieve a better demographic mix, officials have extended the application deadline to April 21.

As of Thursday, county officials had received 80 applications. Officials, however, are hoping to receive at least 120, said Sandi Hatmaker of the jury services department.

Also, officials hope the finalists will reflect the county’s population ratio with regard to sex, age, race and family income.

The grand jury performs a variety of functions, including handing down criminal indictments and investigating local governments to pinpoint problems and suggest solutions.

The county’s Superior Court judges will select 30 finalists from the applicants. Then, 19 grand jurors will be chosen by lottery June 30. Those not picked for the panel will become alternates.

Applicants must commit to working about 40 hours a week. Grand jurors are paid $20 a day for each day they work, plus mileage. Applications can be obtained by calling 654-5025.
