SANTA ANA : City’s Recreation Department Honored

City recreation officials have won top honors from the California Park and Recreation Society for running Safe Haven, a popular gang and drug prevention program.

Allen Doby, executive director for recreation and community services, accepted the organization’s 1994 Award for Excellence from the City Council.

“We’re keeping some of the kids from gangs, getting them to do their homework and learn the value of education. We don’t think were going to eradicate gangs . . . but the long-term effect will be to hold down gang violence,” Doby said.

Safe Haven is a part of the city’s continuing PRIDE (Parks and Recreation Inspire Dignity and Esteem) program.

The $90,000 Safe Haven program serves from 100 to 250 children during the year. After school five days a week, they receive tutoring, participate in sports activities, field trips, and arts and crafts. On some weekends, programs include recreational outings with parents.
