Advanced Micro Devices Inc.’s first-quarter net income rose 16%, exceeding analysts’ expectations, as sales of flash memory and 486 computer processors continued to climb.

AMD is the first of the chip makers to report earnings and is therefore used as a bellwether for the rest of the industry. Most of the chip makers are expected to at least meet--in many cases, exceed--expectations for first-quarter results.

Sunnyvale, Calif.-based AMD posted net income of $96.8 million, or 96 cents a share, up from $84.6 million, or 85 cents, in the year-ago period. Revenue rose 21% to $620 million from $513 million in the year-ago quarter.
