LOS ANGELES : Police Commission Meets on Probe of Chief Williams

The Los Angeles Police Commission met in closed session at the exclusive California Club Monday evening to discuss its investigation of alleged misconduct by Police Chief Willie L. Williams.

The investigation entered its conclusive phase last week when the commission questioned Williams for hours behind closed doors.

Commission spokeswoman Elena Stern said she understood that the private club in downtown Los Angeles had been chosen because of its central location.

“The only item on the agenda is the investigation,” Stern said. “They figured, ‘Why not just meet over dinner?’ ”

She said she did not know which, if any, of the commissioners were club members.

The probe was launched when the commission received a letter from a retired deputy police chief recounting what he said were persistent rumors that Williams had accepted free lodging from Las Vegas casinos, solicited free tickets from Universal Studios and used cellular phones and cars and drivers provided by the department for personal matters.
