Park to Host Cambodian Festival
A Cambodian new year’s celebration featuring kick-boxing demonstrations and traditional dancing gets under way Friday at El Dorado Park in Long Beach.
The two-day festival in the northeast area of the park also will include Cambodian food and music, storytelling, a soccer tournament and other activities.
The event marks the beginning of the Year of the Pig. Organizers say it also commemorates the 20th anniversary of the bloody Khmer Rouge takeover in Cambodia and the exodus of thousands of refugees to the United States. An estimated 40,000 Cambodians live in Long Beach, the largest concentration outside that country.
A coalition of Cambodian organizations--including the Cambodian Business Assn. and the Cambodian Assn. of America--have organized the event, which runs from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
Admission is $3 per car each day. The park charges an additional $3 entry fee on Friday and $5 on Saturday.
