Why Are Single Moms Treated Suspiciously?

Share

Regarding “Going Solo” (March 28) about single men adopting children: While I applaud the commitment these men make to fatherhood and their willingness to overcome society’s prejudices, I find it ironic that single women who become mothers are still regarded with suspicion.

Single mothers are often seen as selfish man-haters or perpetrators of welfare fraud. Once again, women are victims of a double standard.

What every child needs is loving, caring, attentive caretakers and role models. While psychologists and political pundits have become fond of touting the importance of fathers, it is well-proven that families with two male parents, two female parents, one of each, or only one parent can produce happy, healthy well-adjusted children.
