Boston to Invite 25,000 for Its 100th Running
Even before the 1995 Boston Marathon, plans have been made for an expanded race to celebrate its 100th running, in 1996, with an opportunity for runners who cannot meet qualifying times to get into the field and become part of history.
There will be 25,000 numbers given out for that race--the field is 9,410 this year--and computer lottery selections on July 10, October 10 and January 10 will fill out the field with runners who do not meet the test: 3 hours 10 minutes for men under 34, 3:40 for women, with gradual increases for each age group.
More runners than usual with qualifying times are expected, but race officials say as many as 10,000 non-qualifiers will be allowed in the field.
Applications are available by writing Boston Athletic Assn., P.O. Box 1996, Hopkinton, Mass. 01748.
