Countywide : County Librarian to Discuss Cutbacks

Share

County Librarian John M. Adams will discuss how proposed budget cuts would affect the 28-branch Orange County Public Library system during a 2 p.m. forum today in Garden Grove.

Under a plan released last month, Adams proposed closing six branch libraries to reduce the system’s annual budget from $25 million to $20 million. The remaining 22 branches would see their hours increased from about four days a week to about six days a week.

The plan has been criticized by residents who live near the branches targeted for closure. Garden Grove would lose two of its three branches, while Seal Beach, Villa Park, La Palma and Silverado Canyon would each lose a branch library.

Community leaders are now working to raise the money needed to keep their libraries open with reduced hours.

The Board of Supervisors is scheduled to take a final vote on the cutbacks in late May.

Adams’ talk will take place at the Garden Grove Regional Library, 11200 Stanford Ave. The public is invited to participate in the forum, sponsored by Friends of the Garden Grove Library.
