Orange County Almanac
In the 1880s, Chapman Avenue was bustling center of commerce and transportation. For a while, the road even had a horse-drawn streetcar that traveled from Orange Plaza to the fast-growing farm communities of El Modena and McPherson, a town between Orange and El Modena.
The Orange-El Modena-McPherson Railroad was financed by Orange business people eager to do trade with the farming areas. Tracks were laid along the road, and a four-wheel streetcar was purchased. Passenger service began with great fanfare. But as the economy grew sour, the train system grew less popular. Finally, in the 1890s, a storm washed out a bridge, and the streetcar got stuck in McPherson, where over time it was vandalized beyond repair.
Today
Women in search of higher education and grants to pursue their goals may attend a meeting of the American Assn. of University Women.
Architect Deborah Torres--one of more than 6,000 women who have received AAUW grants--will speak about her experiences.
The public may attend the meeting at 7 p.m. at Brea United Methodist Church.
