Bolivia Moves to End Weeks of Labor Unrest
Calm returned to La Paz and other cities Wednesday after the government declared a state of emergency and arrested dozens of labor leaders to end weeks of protests by strikers.
The government moved to end a six-week strike by teachers and a nearly month-old strike by other government workers opposed to the proposed overhaul of Bolivia’s schools and economy.
Strikers have clashed almost daily with police in La Paz.
The government ordered the 90-day state of emergency early Wednesday after talks between the Bolivian Workers Confederation and government negotiators broke down Tuesday night.
The state of emergency prohibits public meetings of three or more people, bans people from carrying firearms and imposes a curfew from midnight to 6 a.m.
