El Modena High School’s performing arts department will present the musical “Godspell” at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday through April 29 at the school, 3920 Spring St., Orange. Advance tickets are $6 for students and children, $8 for adults, available by calling Janet Brooks at (714) 997-6343. Tickets at the door will be $10.

Grad Night Benefit

Cows will be put to the test on April 29 at a fund-raiser for Los Amigos High School’s grad night party.

The event will be at Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley, with the field marked off in squares that sell for $5 each. On the day of the event, three cows will be let loose on the field. The owner of the square on which the first cow “plop” lands gets 2% of the total money raised; the second receives 3% and the third, 5%.

Los Amigos High School senior Carolina Elias recently won a speech contest sponsored by the Fountain Valley Rotary Club. The contest topic was “To be a friend--what am I willing to give.”

Theater Awards

The presentation of a scene from Shakespeare’s “As You Like It” by University High School in Irvine captured the Wynn Pearce Award for outstanding overall performance at the recent Saddleback College High School Theatre Festival.

The Shakespearean comedy was directed by UHS drama instructor Daniel Trevino and featured UHS student Nicole Parker, who was named best actress. Other cast members included Katie Redford, Geoff Tipper, Kyle Gladden, Scott Cronick, Brian King, Peter Fiske and Jessica Progar.

Others receiving awards were Carlo Odicino, Estancia High in Costa Mesa, best actor; Carrie Gifford, Trabuco Hills High in Mission Viejo, best supporting actress; Chet Wilson, Laguna Beach High, best supporting actor; Jay Jakosky, Laguna Beach High, superior individual acting.

El Toro High was recognized for the best technical support and Laguna Beach High for superior group achievement.

More than 150 students from nine Orange County high schools participated in the festival.

Journalism Conference

Jason Kaplan, a senior at Claremont High School in Huntington Beach, has been selected to attend a Washington Journalism Conference sponsored by the Congressional Youth Leadership Council.

This week, 350 high school journalists from across the country are joining the Washington press corps to cover stories, interview newsmakers and get hands-on experience.

Art Award

Garden Grove High School senior Christina Pruner has been selected for a summer scholarship to the Art Institute of Southern California in Laguna Beach. The award was presented following a judging of Pruner’s photography at the Color-It-Orange art show.
