The 25th national Earth Day will be celebrated throughout Orange County with events this weekend offering a chance to kayak, dig through mud, listen to reggae or clean up a beach.

On Saturday, surfers, kayakers or anyone willing to paddle a board or boat can race in the waters off Balboa Pier in Newport Beach at an event sponsored by the Surfrider Foundation to promote ocean awareness.

The race will be preceded by a beach cleanup and followed by a party at Balboa Pier.

At the LAB in Costa Mesa, a shopping mall built of recycled material, participants can plant sunflowers, dance to the tunes of the reggae band Isouljahs or enjoy the performance of four international dance troupes.

LAB’s Earth Day celebration also will focus on children with activities such as thumbprint drawing and necklace making. “Clean Up Your Act,” a children’s musical about recycling, also will be shown.

In Huntington Beach, participants will clean the 3.5-mile-long beach on Saturday.

The volunteer Upper Newport Bay Naturalists will host a “March for Parks” on Saturday to raise money for projects to improve Upper Newport Bay Regional Park. Marchers will collect pledges for their effort. Participants will gather at the Newport-Mesa YMCA at 2300 University Drive for the 10 a.m. march.

Also on Saturday, at the PineCreek Village in Costa Mesa, AnyBody’s Earth Press will sponsor an Eco Trash Fashion Show with models adorned in jewelry made from trash, and a cash-for-trash scavenger hunt.

On Sunday, those willing to get down and dirty can explore all kinds of mud on Shellmaker Island at Upper Newport Back Bay as part of the Upper Newport Bay Naturalists’ sixth annual Earth Day celebration.

Volunteers will teach participants about this back bay, rich in organic mud, which supports birds, plants and animals that live and visit the area.

Jerry Running Deer, a Juaneno Indian of the Acagchemen Nation, also will be at Shellmaker Island to tell the stories of how the Native Americans lived long before the Spanish missionaries came to the region.

Other events include walking, canoe and kayak tours of the ecosystem throughout the day, and a children’s drawing exhibit titled “What Upper Newport Bay means to me.”
